On 2nd-4th November, and then again on 7th-8th, temperatures above 10,000 ft elevation are forecast to be well below freezing, with windchills below 0F (-18C). Daytime high temperatures finally drop closer to average for September on 9th-10th (although overnight lows will remain well above seasonal). Located at its original site, Mingus Mill stands as a tribute to the test of time. Temperatures during and after both storms are forecast to be below seasonal for late November, colder than the storm system in early November, and windy and hence especially cold in the high country. The Round Valley pipe is trickling at about 0.5 L/min. The mountain is known to locals for its scenic views. This will come as no great surprise to those living in the San Jacinto mountains, where we experienced one of the longest, hottest summers ever. Given the importance of this trail for the safety of northbound PCT hikers in particular, it is one of several trails adopted by the Trail Report. The French Broad River is a river in the U.S. states of North Carolina and Tennessee. It flows 218 miles (351 km) from near the town of Rosman in Transylvania County, North Carolina, into Tennessee, where its confluence with the Holston River at Knoxville forms the beginning of the Tennessee River. The river flows through the counties of Transylvania, Buncombe, Henderson, The Forest Service issued a closure order for areas impacted by the Fairview Fire until 1st October 2022. [68], In 1998 the Senior Officials Forum Agreement between Keeseekoowenin Ojibway First Nation and Parks Canada Agency was signed. The Trail Report has adopted Seven Pines Trail as a priority for maintenance work as the trail has had a disproportionate number of lost hiker rescues in the past decade. All sites in the Wasagaming campground contain a fire box, picnic table, and access to washrooms at the unserviced camp sites, and full service sites are equipped with all modern amenities including sewer, electricity, water, picnic table, and fire box. It is now flowing very weakly for about 350 feet in its lower half (photos in previous Report). From Laws east to Caramba the route of the original Caramba Trail has been well-cairned by myself and others and can largely be followed with very careful route-finding. [37] The boars are seen as taking food resources away from bears as well, and the park service has sponsored a program that pays individuals to hunt and kill boars and leave their bodies in locations frequented by bears. The Strong Mansion at the base of the mountain is often used for weddings and other special events, and the nearby Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard is a popular side excursion. [34] After this time the climate was dry, and the percentage of spruce decreased. PCT Mile 179.9 (8070 ft): 2 inches (was 3 inches on 9th), Devils Slide Trail at Humber Park (6550 ft): patchy 0.5-1.0 inch (was 2.5 inches on 9th). In recent days we have also surveyed trails around Tahquitz Peak, South Ridge, Spitler Peak, and Deer Springs, among others. [7] They also used the land south-west of the mountain for the buffalo chase and making of pemmican. Currently the USFS gate at Humber Park remains open and the parking area has been largely plowed. Forest Service campgrounds at Boulder Basin, Marion Mountain, and Fern Basin are now closed for the season. The forest reserve was set aside as a national park in 1929, officially declared Riding Mountain National Park on May 30, 1933. However such storms can be localized, and San Jacinto Peak received only 0.15 inch, while Little Round Valley and upper Deer Springs Trail showed evidence of only very light rain. Details of snow depths measured at various locations on the trail system are given at the foot of this posting. These sites are equipped with barbecue pits, pit privies, and most have access to drinking water. Monsoon thunderstorms, usually in the afternoon, remain forecast as a possibility for the next week but on 9th-11th October in particular. A permit is needed to enter Riding Mountain National Park by vehicle, and can be purchased at the park gates. The Deer Springs stream crossing at the PCT/Deer Springs Trail (approx. [51] The legendary hellbender inhabits the range's swifter streams. Nevertheless Seven Pines remains a genuine wilderness trail unlike the relatively wide, bare, and obvious routes of, for example, Devils Slide or Marion Mountain trails. Spikes are recommended. Pseudoscymnus tsugae, a type of beetle in the ladybug family, Coccinellidae, has been introduced in an attempt to control the pests.[56]. [23] Despite his eventual departure, the park now has an abundant beaver population partially because of his efforts. Seven Pines Trail has one set of hiker tracks through the snow since the storm in early November 2022. At San Jacinto Peak (10,810ft/3295m) on Thursday 25th August 2022 at 0835 the air temperature was 55.2F (13C), with a windchill temperature of 52.0F (11C), 67% relative humidity, and a very light NNE breeze sustained at 3 mph gusting to 4.5 mph. A string of Overhill villages, including Chota and Tanasi, dotted the Little Tennessee valley north of Chilhowee. It was one of the strangest ascents I have made. Cherokee chief William Holland Thomas formed a Confederate legion made up mostly of Cherokee soldiers. This effect will be temporary, but at least for the next week, water is widespread in the high country. Generally east or south-east winds, the outermost hint of Hurricane Kay perhaps, are pushing smoke and active burn areas away from here. There is gentle surface flow in two short sections, for about 50 yards behind the Campsite 2 Owls Hootch sign, and for another 70 yards a little further downstream. The Round Valley pipe is flowing at 1.0 L/min (measured 23rd September, photo above). On 24th and 28th we barebooted to the Peak on well-traveled and compacted tracks through light icy snow. Vehicles not parked in these spaces may be ticketed and/or towed. [UPDATED Friday 9th September @ 1130: I am currently at San Jacinto Peak having hiked up this morning to observe Tropical Storm Kay, more on this in a subsequent posting. Five are down between Miles 183-185.5 (photos below), and there are two minor ones near Mile 180.5, roughly 1.5 miles north of Saddle Junction. The snow level may eventually drop below 5000 ft (around the lower end of Idyllwild) while estimates for snowfall above 10,000 ft elevation currently range from 10-30 inches. Flash flooding often occurs after heavy rain.[9]. Tahquitz Creek is flowing gently at the northern (lower) end of Little Tahquitz Valley at a flow rate of roughly 2.0L/min. Although most of the downed trees reported this summer were apparently cleared in July, at least four more major trees came down in Tropical Storm Kay. Since Friday 23rd we have had a modest late September heat wave, with temperatures (especially the overnight lows) above seasonal. When the Cherokee aligned themselves with the British at the outbreak of the American Revolution in 1776, American forces launched an invasion of Cherokee territory. Some of the red spruce trees in the Smokies are believed to be 300 years old, and the tallest rise to over 100 feet (30m). Refill prescriptions online, order items for delivery or store pickup, and create Photo Gifts. Temperatures are forecast to be far above seasonal from 30th August until at least 8th September, with the likelihood that several early September temperature records for the San Jacinto mountains will be broken. The closure order for May Valley Road (5S21) expired on 5th September, but work on hazardous tree removal continues and looks unlikely to be completed before October. While these dampened the trails, impacts on water sources were negligible compared to the more widespread and intense monsoonal rains of 30th July-1st August. The Oconaluftee River Trail follows its namesake stream for 1.5 miles to Cherokee, North Carolina. PCT Mile 186.2). PCT Mile 186.2). Both trails were virtually completely clear of snow. There is a well-traveled track from Saddle Junction to Tahquitz Peak. Get out to explore the lands and waters you help us protect. The wind and cloud were very reminiscent of my many winter ascents, but the air temperature was 40-50 degrees too warm. At the Peak on Monday 12th September 2022 at 0840 the air temperature was 42.6F (6C), with a windchill temperature of 32.0F (0C), 78% relative humidity, and a gusty SSE wind sustained at 13 mph gusting to 18.7 mph. The passage of Tropical Storm Kay on 9th September brought down many trees and branches, and hikers should anticipate finding new and additional treefall hazards and branches on trails. Of those, 27 are in the 0.6 mile section between Willow Creek crossing and the State Park boundary. The Davis House offers a rare chance to view a log house built from chestnut wood before the chestnut blight decimated the American Chestnut in our forests during the 1930s and early 1940s. Although they flowed for a few days after Tropical Storm Kay, they are now dry again. I have not thoroughly resurveyed Fuller Ridge Trail since Kay blew through. PCT Mile 179.9 (8070 ft): 0-1 inch (was 3 inches on 9th). [12] These mountain wave winds are strongest in a narrow area along the foothills, and can create extensive areas of fallen trees and roof damage, especially around Cades Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Camp Creek community. There is a very well-traveled track through increasingly patchy thin icy snow from Saddle Junction to Tahquitz Peak. Work to remove hazardous trees, burned by the 2018 Cranston Fire, finally got underway in mid August. Snowshoes will likely be recommended above about 8000-9000 ft for several days at least, until trails become established and compacted (which can be slow at this time of year), and certainly for off-trail travel. However the afternoon is when fire behaviour tends to get vigourous and erratic. Given colder temperatures for the foreseeable future, melting is expected to slow (or almost stop in the high country) and spikes will remain recommended well into December at least. Thank you for your support. Remarkably Tropical Storm Kay did not add any new treefall hazards to this trail. Note however that snow depth is rarely indicative of the ease (or otherwise) of hiking a given trail. The nearby Round Valley creek and the small creek in Tamarack Valley both dried up in May. The company also established company towns at Townsend (named for the company's chief owner and manager, Wilson B. Townsend), Elkmont, and Tremont. At nearly a mile high, Newfound Gap is significantly cooler than the surrounding lowlands and receives much more snow. At San Jacinto Peak (10,810ft/3295m) on Friday 2nd September 2022 at 0740 the air temperature was 60.5F (16C), with a windchill temperature of 54.5F (13C), 47% relative humidity, and a gusty NNE breeze sustained at 5 mph gusting to 10.4 mph. An avid hiker, early activist for protection of the mountain environment, and unique artist, among many other things, for much of the latter half of the 20th Century Ernie Maxwell was arguably the dominant personality in the San Jacinto mountains. They spill from a 50-foot waterfall called Courthouse Falls at the terminus of Courthouse Creek near Balsam Grove. Photos of the spring and trough taken earlier that same morning were in last weeks Report available here. The creek in Little Round Valley dried in both mid June and again in late August, but flowed between those times and subsequently thanks to monsoon and storm rainfall. The State Park campground at Stone Creek is also closed. [94], The Great Smoky Mountains are also home to The Gatlinburg SkyLift and SkyBridge. Although some treefall hazards from Red Tahquitz to Antsell Rock (PCT Miles 172.5-175) were cleared in June 2021 prior to the rockslide removal work, the situation has badly deteriorated since. Attention is currently on the Fairview Fire which started just south-east of Hemet late afternoon on 5th September, quickly spreading to over 2000 acres, killing two people and destroying multiple properties. It flows 218 miles (351km)[4] from near the town of Rosman in Transylvania County, North Carolina, into Tennessee, where its confluence with the Holston River at Knoxville forms the beginning of the Tennessee River. As described below, there were only about three inches at Saddle Junction (PCT Mile 179) yesterday. Snow, weather, and trail conditions for the San Jacinto mountains. Some major trails have accumulated treefall hazards since late 2019 (partly due to reduced agency work during the coronavirus pandemic) passable with care by hikers but not for stock. River in North Carolina and Tennessee, United States, This article is about the river west of the Eastern Continental Divide (ECD) in western North Carolina. While both Tennessee and North Carolina joined the Confederacy at the outbreak of the American Civil War in 1861, Union sentiment in the Great Smoky Mountains was much stronger relative to other regions in these two states. The camp consisted of fifteen buildings and housed 440 to 450 prisoners of war. Tahquitz Creek is flowing gently at the northern (lower) end of Little Tahquitz Valley at a flow rate of 2L/min. Flow rate at Wellmans Cienega, which had dried up in the first week of September, was 3L/min on 10th September. However the route is largely well-traveled and compacted. Hardwood trees moved into the region from the coastal plains, replacing the spruce-fir forests in the lower elevations. What this springs lacks in volume it makes up for with remarkable reliability. Visit Great Smoky Mountains National Park's official online store for books, maps, and guides to the park. How much precipitation is associated with the wind and cloud is unclear from the divergent forecast models, currently ranging from a light drizzle to a couple of inches, but about 0.5-1.0 inch is suggested by most forecasts, mainly overnight on Friday 9th into the morning of Saturday 10th. Dark Canyon Road (4S02, the access to Seven Pines Trail), and Santa Rosa Truck Trail (7S02) also closed to vehicle traffic for the season on 7th November 2022. Early settlers lived in 16 feet (4.9m) x 20 feet (6.1m) log cabins, although these were replaced by more elaborate log houses and eventually, as lumber became available, by modern frame houses. Campfires on all USFS lands in the San Jacinto mountains (including in fire rings at campgrounds and yellow post sites), and smoking, are prohibited for the remainder of the year. Eleven of these are in the 1.5 mile section closest to Fuller Ridge Campground (approx. Other reptiles include the eastern box turtle, the eastern fence lizard, the black rat snake, and the northern water snake. Between these locations Tahquitz Creek is largely dry (but presumably flowing subsurface). The Wellmans Cienega springs are the sources for Willow Creek, which is currently flowing weakly but reliably where it crosses the Willow Creek Trail (photo below). [10] For comparison, the surrounding terrain has annual precipitation of around 40 to 50in (1,000 to 1,300mm). This is flowing weakly both above and below the trough (starting 60 feet upslope from the trail that leads to the campsite). This facilitated survey of the highest parts of the PCT in the San Jacinto mountains (roughly Miles 179-181 and 185.5-183.5) plus several of its side trails. Snowshoes are not required anywhere on the established trail system, where snow is now too shallow, icy and compacted. 10 inches on 9th November), Wellman Divide (9700 ft): 0-1 inch (was 4 inches on 9th November), Annies Junction/approx. Forty downed trees, most from an ice storm in late December 2021, plus dozens of additional trunks and branches in the trail, were removed by the Trail Report from this trail in early 2022. Hikers should be prepared for unpredictable, rapidly changing weather conditions in the high country in late summer. Operating from 1943 to 1945, the camp was built on the northeast shore of Whitewater Lake, approximately 300 kilometres (190mi) north-west of Winnipeg. A tiny pool remains as a useful emergency water source for dogs. [62] Only four-stroke and direct injected two-stroke equipped motor boats are permitted on Clear Lake. Most of the forest is a mature second-growth hardwood forest. As for temperatures, the average temperature difference between the mountains (Newfound Gap around 5,000 feet (1,500m) MSL and the valleys (Park Headquarters around 1,600 feet (490m) MSL in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is between 10 and 13 F (6 and 7 C) with highs and between 3 and 6 F (2 and 3 C) with lows. [23] Stands dominated by the Eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) are occasionally found along streams and broad slopes above 3,500 feet (1,100m). Species that thrive in southern hardwood forests, such as the red-eyed vireo, wood thrush, wild turkey, northern parula, ruby-throated hummingbird, and tufted titmouse, are found throughout the range's lower elevations and cove hardwood forests. In Idyllwild the overnight low temperature dropped below the monthly average only twice between 9th July 2022 and 10th September, a period of 64 days (and the exceptions were marginal, on 27th and 30th August when lows of 55F were recorded, the average low for August being 55.4F). At the end of this time beaked hazelnut appeared and the amount of bur oak increased, with the climate becoming cooler and moister. Of those, 27 are in the 0.6 mile section between Willow Creek crossing and the State Park boundary. Cautious navigation remains required for those who do not have significant experience of hiking this trail. South Ridge Trail is now functionally clear of snow to Tahquitz Peak with only 1-2% icy snow cover overall. However they are not required, depending on your comfort level with postholing in drifted snow of moderate depth. Nevertheless Seven Pines remains a genuine wilderness trail and is nothing like the relatively wide, bare, and obvious routes of, for example, Devils Slide or Marion Mountain trails. Ephemeral creeks, such as those along Marion Mountain Trail and on Deer Springs Trail, dried up in May. Water quality is not great and should be filtered.]. This may result in very strong winds and bitterly cold windchill temperatures at upper elevations. Seven Pines Trail has had limited hiker traffic since November 2018, largely because Dark Canyon Road was closed almost continuously from February 2019 to July 2022. The Peak Trail still has about 90% cover of icy snow to San Jacinto Peak. Thunderstorms with lightning, brief but intense precipitation (including hail), and rapid temperature drops, can occur in the high country even when such storms are not forecast for lower elevations. The range is sometimes called the Smoky Mountains and the name is commonly shortened to the Smokies. The blue trail system is popular with hikers while the yellow trail system can also be used by bikers and horseback riders at designated times of the year. At the Peak on Monday 17th October 2022 at 0835 the air temperature was 35.1F (2C), with a windchill temperature of 20.1F (-7C), 86% relative humidity, and a steady NNE wind sustained at 18 mph gusting to 23.2 mph. Idyllwild received a good rain overnight with 0.56 inch recorded by 0700 (at 5550ft). It is safest for all concerned that hikers hike the Trail rather than the highways. The trail does feature elevation changes; youll hike approximately 4.7 miles uphill and about 3.4 miles downhill. Full fire restrictions introduced on Thursday 26th May remain in place on Forest Service lands, as described in detail here. South Ridge Road is clear of ice and snow. The Hudson's Bay Company established Riding Mountain House for trading with the Ojibwe people led by Chief Okanase and then by Chief Keeseekoowenin. Devils Slide Trail is almost clear of icy snow to about 7700 ft although some extended dirty icy patches remain below that. They did not receive significant input from summer thunderstorms, and the well-known north springs (photo below) may dry completely in the next month or two without significant precipitation. Although most of the downed trees reported this summer were apparently cleared in July, at least four more major trees came down in Tropical Storm Kay (thanks to Snezana Nesic for this information). [70], The Middle towns, including Kittuwa, were burned by General Griffith Rutherford, and several of the Overhill towns were burned by John Sevier. [I was surprised to find a little trickle on 2nd October immediately following a thunderstorm earlier that day, but this has not persisted.]. PCT Mile 177. At San Jacinto Peak (10,810ft/3295m) on Thursday 24th November 2022 at 0810 the air temperature was 29.0F (-2C), with a windchill temperature of 5.7F (-15C), 16% relative humidity, and a severe NNW wind sustained at 25 mph gusting to 35.1 mph. Some of the more industrious farmers operated gristmills, general stores, and sorghum presses. The first two, at 0.90 and 0.95 miles down, cross a tiny side creek which is largely dry and should be ignored. The switchbacks up to Tahquitz Peak average only 20% icy snow cover, but the frequency and length of ice patches increases on the uppermost switchbacks. Consisting of a protected area 2,969 km 2 (1,146 sq mi), the forested parkland stands in sharp contrast to the surrounding prairie farmland. Photos illustrating the current state of Tahquitz Creek at PCT Mile 177 and Little Tahquitz Valley, and at Little Round Valley, were included in last weeks Report available here. [7] It has the range's highest topographical prominence at 4,503 feet (1,373m). Trails remain very icy due to daily freeze/thaw cycles and compaction from hiker traffic, so spikes are recommended throughout the trail system above about 8000 ft (lower in places). In 1935, this land was expropriated by the government for the creation of the park. PCT Mile 179.9 (8070 ft): 0-1 inch (was 3 inches on 9th November), Devils Slide Trail at Humber Park (6550 ft): 0 inch (was 2.5 inches on 9th November), Idyllwild (at 5550 ft): 0 inch (was <1 inch on 9th November). [17][18] Much of the public infrastructure in Riding Mountain National Park was created during the 1930s by labourers participating in Canada's great depression relief programs. On average, 69 inches of snow falls at the gap. As of 1830 rainfall at San Jacinto Peak today measured 0.9 inch. The range is roughly bounded on the south by the Tuckasegee River and to the southeast by Soco Creek and Jonathan Creek. Temperatures will again drop to well below seasonal, and moderate precipitation is possible at all elevations, including 3-8 inches of snow in the high country, with a freeze level down to about Idyllwild (5000-5500 ft). There is the very slim possibility of the first snow of the winter on 14th-15th October around the highest peaks above 10,000 feet elevation. We have surveyed the high country almost daily, with hikes taking in San Jacinto Peak at least twice per week, Tahquitz Peak area once per week, and a variety of other trails on other days (World Cup viewing permitting of course). Spikes are recommended at least for descending upper Deer Springs Trail. Devils Slide Trail is largely clear of icy snow to about 7400 ft (Middle Spring) although some extended patches remain below that. The local climate is cool and moist due to a higher elevation than the surrounding area. SNOW DEPTHS measured on 9th November 2022 are as follows. [1], The Great Smokies are part of an International Biosphere Reserve. At San Jacinto Peak (3295 m/10,810 ft) on Monday 31st October 2022 at 0850 the air temperature was 41.7F (5C), with a windchill temperature of 34.0F (1C), 11% relative humidity, and a steady NE wind sustained at 8 mph gusting to 10.0 mph. The U.S. National Park Service preserves and maintains 78 structures within the national park that were once part of the numerous small Appalachian communities scattered throughout the range's river valleys and coves. All hikers, but especially those planning to hike Skyline Trail (either on its own or as part of the Cactus-to-Clouds route), should note that the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway is closed for annual maintenance from Monday 12th September to Sunday 9th October 2022, with a tentative reopening date of 10th October. On my hike up to San Jacinto Peak late this morning there was a little drizzle on most of Devils Slide Trail, then an on/off mix of drizzle, freezing rain,, and fine snow in the high country. Early on cold mornings, the icy snow is grippy, and I did not find spikes necessary on 5th. With compaction of the trails over the next few days, snowshoes may become less useful, however they will remain valuable for off-trail travel at the highest elevations for the foreseeable future. Patchy rime was forming above 8500 ft elevation, but at the same time there were occasional patches of blue sky above us, and the cloud ceiling was at about 9000 ft. Consequently the high country was above the cloud and remained dry (for now).]. Approximately 33 miles (53km) of the river in Cocke County, starting at the North Carolina border and extending downstream to the place where it flows into Douglas Lake, are designated as a ClassIII, Partially Developed River. PCT Mile 186.2). Hikers should be prepared for temperatures generally near freezing in the high country, and often below freezing around the high peaks when considering wind chill effects (see below for my latest weather observations from San Jacinto Peak). Newfound Gap's recognition as the lowest pass through the Great Smoky Mountains did not come until 1872. The Wellman Trail from Annies Junction to Wellman Divide has about 40% icy snow cover. The dominant species include yellow birch (Betula alleghaniensis), basswood (Tilia americana), yellow buckeye (Aesculus flava), tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera; commonly called "tulip poplar"), silverbells (Halesia carolina), sugar maple (Acer saccharum), cucumber magnolia (Magnolia acuminata), shagbark hickory (Carya ovata), Carolina hemlock (Tsuga caroliniana) and eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis). It is hard to overlook the irony that in a world with such a rapidly changing climate we may largely depend upon a hurricane to put out a huge wildfire that started during an exceptional heatwave. Some hikers may continue to find spikes useful for some of the minor icy patches but they are no longer required. The culture of the area is that of Southern Appalachia, and previously the Cherokee people. What this springs lacks in volume it makes up for with remarkable reliability. The snow level may fall to about 6000 ft (a little above the elevation of Idyllwild) while estimates for snowfall above 10,000 ft elevation range widely from 6-24 inches. SNOW DEPTHS measured on 2nd-5th December 2022 are as follows, with depths after the only significant storm of this winter to date (on 9th November) for comparison in parentheses where known. UPDATE 17th November 2022: as predicted, and even as melting proceeds steadily, trails are getting increasing icy due to daily freeze/thaw cycles, and spikes are recommended throughout the trail system above about 7000 ft. On my hike to San Jacinto Peak this morning, again I did not need spikes to ascend, but they were invaluable for descending all the way down to upper Devils Slide Trail. The Deer Springs stream crossing at the PCT/Deer Springs Trail (approx. [34] The town site Wasagaming has an average July temperature of 16.5C and an average January temperature of -19.7C. Cautious navigation remains required for those who do not have significant experience of hiking this trail. There is a very well-traveled track from Saddle Junction to Tahquitz Peak (multiple photos below). The 0.4 mile section of South Ridge Trail between Chinquapin Flat/PCT and Tahquitz Peak has a well-traveled and level track to follow through the steadily melting 1-2 inches of icy snow. Many hikers will nevertheless find spikes useful in places, especially for descending. They are a subrange of the Appalachian Mountains, and form part of the Blue Ridge Physiographic Province. On the way up I noted that Middle Spring on Devils Slide Trail, and the north springs at Wellmans Cienega, had all finally dried up. In 1896, land adjacent to Clear Lake known as IR 61A was given to the Keeseekoowenin Ojibway First Nation by the Canadian government to protect from encroaching settlement. A major change to the weather might occur next week (see Weather section below) with forecasts suggesting a possible double storm system impacting the San Jacinto mountains, and cold temperatures at all mountain elevations for a week at least. The commission also had to deal with the Tennessee and North Carolina legislatures, which at times were opposed to spending taxpayer money on park efforts.
